Two researchers from POLO - Refrigeration and Thermophysics Research Laboratories at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) will be speakers at the Brazilian Congress of Thermal Sciences and Engineering - ENCIT 2020, one of the main international conferences promoted by the Brazilian Association of Engineering and Mechanical Sciences ( ABCM).

Professor Alvaro Toubes Prata will be the first Keynote Speaker, at 11am on November, right after the ceremony and opening. He will address the theme Brazil in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities in Engineering and Technology. For 42 years at UFSC - where he held various positions, including that of dean -, Prata teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, coordinating teaching, research and extension projects, is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering . His research areas are heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Since 1992 he has been a level 1A researcher at CNPq, recognized with the Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit - Grã Cruz Class, and the Anísio Teixeira Award, on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of CAPES.

Professor Jader Barbosa Jr. will give a lecture Cooling with magnets: Development of a magnetocaloric cellar at 10:30 am on November 18th, at the Symposium on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration within the ENCIT schedule. At UFSC, he coordinates the Embrapii Unit and the National Institute of Science and Technology - Refrigeration and Thermophysics (INCT-RT), in addition to having supervised or co-supervised 14 doctoral theses and 28 master's dissertations, six of which were awarded with the ABCM-Embraer and CAPES Thesis Awards. For his own doctoral work, in 2001 he received the Dudley Newitt Prize, awarded by Imperial College to theses of exceptional merit. In 2004, he received the Young Scientist Award from the EUROTHERM Committee.

Jader Barbosa is co-author of more than 280 scientific articles in indexed journals and conferences (peer-review), member of the Scientific Committee of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer, of the Assembly of World Conferences on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics . He is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering (Springer) and associate editor of the journal Applied Thermal Engineering (Elsevier).

About ENCIT 2020

The 18th edition of the Brazilian Congress of Thermal Sciences and Engineering will be held online, between 16 and 20 November, by the Department and the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
