Alvaro Toubes Prata is full professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, UFSC. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the University of Brasilia, a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, USA. At UFSC since 1978, he works in undergraduate and graduate courses, coordinating teaching, research and extension projects. From 2000 to 2004 he was dean of research and postgraduate studies, and from May 2008 to May 2012 he was dean of UFSC. He is recognized with the Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit - Grã Cruz Class, and received the Anísio Teixeira Award on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of CAPES. He was National Secretary for Technological Development and Innovation (May 2012 to September 2014, and June 2016 to January 2018), National Secretary for Research and Development Policies and Programs (February 2018 to December 2018) and Executive Secretary ( September 2014 to April 2015) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. He is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. His research areas are heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
