Jader Barbosa Jr. was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He holds B.Sc. (1995) and M.Sc. (1997) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London, UK (2001). He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil. His academic interests cover the areas of Fluids Engineering and Thermal Sciences, with an emphasis on Thermodynamics of Mixtures, Phase Change, Multiphase Flows, Heat Exchangers and Emerging Cooling Technologies. In 2004, he received the Young Scientist Award from the European Committee for the advancement of Thermal Sciences (EUROTHERM). He also received the Dudley Newitt Award (2001) of Imperial College for a Doctoral Thesis of Exceptional Merit, and the HTFS Award (Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Service) for the best paper at the UK National Heat Transfer Conference (Edinburgh, 1999). At UFSC, he has advised/co-advised 10 doctorate theses and 22 masters dissertations, six of which have been awarded the prestigious ABCM-Embraer and CAPES Prizes. Dr. Barbosa is PI/Co-PI in research projects supported by public funding agencies and private companies in the oil and gas, refrigeration and aeronautical industrial segments. He has published more than 220 scientific papers in indexed journals and international peer-reviewed conferences. In July 2017, his Scopus and Google Scholar h-indexes were 17 and 21, respectively. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer and an Officer of the Assembly of World Conferences on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics. He has been a member of Scientific Committees in a number of international conferences, including the International Conference on Boiling and Condensation Heat Transfer and the International Conference on Magnetic Refrigeration at Room Temperature (THERMAG). Dr. Barbosa has been Guest Editor of Special Issues of the International Journal of Multiphase Flow and of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science (Elsevier). He is currently the Fluid Mechanics Technical Editor of the Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering (Springer). He was chairman of the 9th World Conference on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics (ExHFT-9), held in Iguazu Falls, Brazil. He has been a member of Evaluation Committees for CAPES (2010-2012 and 2013-2016) and CNPq (2017-2020). Between September 2017 and January 2018, Dr. Barbosa will be a Courtesy Professor at the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University, as part of a Fulbright Visiting Professor Award.
