The Higher Education Personnel Improvement Coordination (CAPES) awarded to Jaime Andres Lozano Cadena, a member of Polo / Embrapii Unit, the CAPES Award Thesis 2016 Engineering III area for the thesis "Designing the rotary magnetic refrigerator", held in May 2015, under the guidance of Professor Jader Riso Barbosa Junior and co-supervision of Professor Alvaro Toubes Graduate Program Silver in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The awards ceremony will take place in the CAPES headquarters in Brasilia on December 14. The outcome of the Grand Prix CAPES Thesis 2016 will be announced in the awards ceremony.

Magnetic refrigeration is an alternative technology for cold production based on the magnetocaloric effect. This thesis was to design, construction and experimental evaluation of a magnetic refrigerator rotary composed of an optimized magnetic circuit of the rotor-stator type, a fixed active magnetic regenerator packed with ball gadolinium and two rotary valves for magneto-hydraulic synchronization. In addition to the measurement of system performance parameters, it proposed a method of quantification of mechanical and thermodynamic losses in magnetic refrigerators.
