Summary

The present work deals with a computational modeling of oil and refrigerant mixture flow in a straight horizontal pipe with constant diameter. This type of mixture flow occurs in several components in refrigerating systems, as well as a variety of other engineering situations. Therefore, improving the knowledge of this flow can bring benefits to refrigeration and lubrification industries, and contributes to a better understanding of two-phase flows. The outgassing of the refrigerant dissolved in the oil occurs when the pressure decreases, forming gas bubbles or even producing foam, which results in different flow patterns. It’s then desirable to numerically determine pressure and temperature throughout the flow, relating them to the oil/refrigerant mixture characteristics, such as quality and void fraction. Also desirable is to analyze the influence of parameters such as the mass flow rate, refrigerant mass fraction, temperature and pressure at the entrance of the tube. [...]
