Summary

Journal bearing is the most traditional type of bearing which partially or totally embraces the rotating shaft and is responsible for supporting the load. The problem of hydrodynamic lubrication and the flow of oil film in bearings are only solved by making use of Reynolds’ equation. It is nowadays well known that the oil film in journal bearings cannot be held circumferentially continuous due to cavitation phenomena. The main difficulty in using Reynolds’ equation resides in the precise determination of the cavitation edge, or the angular position after which the oil starts to flow in streamers. [...]
